Harp instruction: private, academic and youth orchestra
Harp instruction is a delight for me! It is a privilege to be involved in the creative learning process of my students.
I realized early in my musical career that I wanted to share my joy for the harp and to teach others to play this wonderful instrument. I was very fortunate to have great harp teachers, and I wish to continue their legacy.
I currently have teaching studios in San Francisco, the Peninsula, and the East Bay.
One of my greatest joys is guiding my students as they progress and succeed, moving towards their next individual goal. Students participate in spring and winter harp ensembles to showcase their work in performances before
||a live audience. Sample program recitals are displayed here.
Because the harp can be a difficult instrument to learn, I teach all aspects of harp technique along with a general knowledge of music. I teach both Salzedo and Grandjany methods of playing the harp.
Each lesson includes harp solos, technical exercises, and an overview of music concepts. Together, we work toward short and long-term goals with an emphasis on musical expression, technique and rhythm. I integrate music theory, sight reading, and ear training with each lesson.
All of these skills enhance the student’s ability to play. My students enjoy music and are continously motivated to learn.
I am on the music faculties of California State University East Bay, Mills College, Patton University and Diablo Valley College.
I am a Harp Coach for Youth Orchestras in San Francisco, Oakland, and the Peninsula. In addition, I have devoted several years to the Youth in Arts Program, Marin County, “Artists in Residence”.
I am a co-founder and Chair of the Advisory Committee, Seaside Music Academy for young artists, at San Francisco State University.
My students have the opportunity to compete. As Co-President of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the American Harp Society, I re-instated the Inez Stafford Harp Competition for Northern California. I also serve as adjudicator for student competitions at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the School of the Arts, San Francisco, and formerly at Indiana University.
